I think Diane Ravitch would agree with Suli Breaks’ line at 3:04. “Exams are society’s methods to for telling you what you’re worth. But you can’t let society tell you what you are.”
It makes sense to assess student learning, but we need authentic assessments that provide pertinent, real time information to the teacher to guide their practice to better meet the needs of the students in their class and informs the individual/student of their progress.
We’re engaged in this work at McAuliffe. Authentic assessments are widely varied, look and sound different than multiple choice tests, and provide very interesting and compelling information that is highly useful to the student and teacher.
