Flag raising ceremony

Flag raising ceremony

As many of your know our middle school students regularly raise and lower our flag. They realized that, based on its condition, it was time to retire the flag and came up with a plan.

These students (N and S) visited classes and talked about their role and what they have learned from the process of raising, lowering, and caring for the flag. Last Friday at recess, they retired the flag and raised a new one (seen here) during recess. After the ceremony, the students said the Pledge of Allegiance. The ceremony was open for any of our students to join them.

Earlier this year, in honor of Christa McAuliffe, the Thompson family asked Sen. Barbara Boxer to fly the flag at the US Capital and then donated the flag to the school. Based on their request, Sen. Boxer flew the flag on September 2nd, Christa McAuliffe’s birthday.

Thank you to the students for taking the time and energy to both honor our flag and the traditions around raising and retiring them. Thank you also to the Thompson Family for their generous donation to our school.
